The Immortal: Vampires
Author's Notes: Ben Mowbray"Vampires" was no easy book to write, but it was interesting, and more importantly lots of fun, to work on. I'd already seen that the subject of vampires had already been well covered, but after reviewing the material, much of it good, I came to conclusion that there was still much that could be covered on the subject in different areas. Many books focused on the traditional image of the vampire, or rather, what's been handed to us after a century of Stoker-based literature and cinema, but neglected universally the actual real world folklore and mythology of the vampire. I also noticed that just about everybody has a DIFFERENT concept of what a vampire is or should be. Recognising this fact, I was determined to make sure that I covered as many different types of vampire 'strains' as possible, and what I couldn't cover, make available through the use of a template construction set, optional and variant rules. Hopefully, the result is a book that provides options for those who might be discontented with the actual templates and monster types presented in the middle of the book. Reasearching the book was a lengthy process, and there were so many vampire types out there in the world's mythology and folklore that I had to significantly cull the list down. Some of the more extraordinary and exotic vampires, such as the suction-cupped fingered, fig-tree dwelling "Yara-ma-ya who" of Australia, or the most unusual vampire pumpkins and watermellons mentioned in gypsy folklore (yes, you read right!), I kept off the final draft, along with literally dozens of other vampire-like creatures that I felt strayed too far from the modern concept of a vampire or resembled another entry too closely. I also wanted to include vampire rules for popular fiction as well as folklore. Vampire lovers are likely to want to bring their favourite breed to life in their home brew d20 campaign, and I was more than happy to provide. The demonic vampire is quite usable for the vampires from "From Dusk till Dawn" and the Buffy and Angel series, while the romantic vampire presents overpowered vampires to simulate a similar world to that presented in the Vampire Chronicles. Along with the rules, your favourite movie, comic book or literate vampire could pretty easily be brought to life. The final section of the book includes literary vampires, the stats of which I came up with after reading all of the source material (now quite conveniently made available online for free, thanks to copyright laws which free all 19th century literature into the public domain), which can be found here. The vampire gods are all original and hopefully interesting. |
